Grand Theft Auto VI was almost not just about Jason and Lucia. Rockstar Games revealed that during early development, the team seriously considered having four playable protagonists, even considering whether to upgrade from the three-protagonist system in Grand Theft Auto V.
Four Protagonists Sounds Great, But Could Have Been Too Scattered
Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson stated that the team discussed adding more protagonists, but ultimately decided it might dilute the connection between players and each character. After all, Grand Theft Auto V proved that three protagonists allow players to switch between Michael, Franklin, and Trevor, experiencing the story from different angles. But increasing to four would mean players need to distribute their time across more characters, potentially making the narrative and character development more fragmented. Rockstar calculated: four protagonists looks luxurious, but players might not grow attached enough to any of them.

Keeping Only Jason and Lucia Actually Makes Their Relationship More Important
Grand Theft Auto VI ultimately kept only two protagonists: Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. These two are not just crime-fighting partners, but the core of the game story. The recently released Extended Look further showcases their interactions, including living together, committing crimes, and maintaining their relationship. Rockstar clearly wants players to spend more time with this duo, rather than constantly switching between multiple characters like in Grand Theft Auto V.

Four Protagonists Got Cut, But Players Might Actually Win
From a development perspective, this decision also shows Rockstar was not simply pursuing more is better. Four protagonists could have made the story look grander, but would also mean more characters needing complete narratives, missions, animations, voice acting, and character development. In the end, Rockstar chose to concentrate resources on Jason and Lucia, making these two characters the true core of Grand Theft Auto VI. So this is not Rockstar could not do four protagonists, but rather they could, but decided it might actually make the game harder to enjoy.
