New intel on Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay has emerged. According to a New York Times interview with Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson, he personally played through the entire game in February 2026, and it took approximately 80 hours!

However, what is really starting to worry players is that these 80 hours do not represent clearing all content. Nelson playthrough mainly covered the main story and some optional objectives that affect the story. In other words, if players actually start exploring everywhere, doing side quests, and participating in various activities, actual playtime could increase even further.
80 Hours Just the Baseline?
Rockstar clearly did not just make a bigger map this time. Grand Theft Auto VI is packed with character interactions, life activities, and environmental details. Nelson revealed that players can even have Jason and Lucia engage in daily activities like eating, drinking, and exercising, with some food items temporarily affecting the character health status.

Combined with Rockstar stating that Grand Theft Auto VI map size is approximately three times that of Red Dead Redemption 2, this means that when players truly start going off the rails, their time will likely be devoured by roadside events, exploration, and side content.

Players Thought 80 Hours Was Long, But It Might Be a Conservative Estimate
GamesRadar also pointed out that if players really invest time in personalization, exploration, and various micro-interactions, Grand Theft Auto VI playtime could easily exceed hundreds of hours. Not to mention the Online mode and post-launch content coming after release, so this number will only keep growing.

In other words, the 80 hours Rockstar employees spent might not represent the game is 80 hours total, but rather the main story plus some content is already 80 hours. When the full version launches, what will really break players is not the game being too short, but playing for three months and still not being able to find what they missed in Vice City.

GTA 6 Has Not Launched Yet, But Time Management Is Already Doomed
Grand Theft Auto VI is currently scheduled for November 19, 2026. As Rockstar continues revealing more game details, the scale of this title is becoming increasingly absurd. From the massive map and more complex NPC interactions, to the now-revealed 80-hour developer playthrough, Rockstar seems to be stretching the phrase open world to new lengths. The only thing players might need to worry about is: after November 19, will there be any time left for work?
