Grand Theft Auto VI isn’t even out yet, but Rockstar is already hinting at just how ambitious they’re being this time. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson said the team wants to bring the deep emotional connection players felt with characters in Red Dead Redemption 2 into GTA 6—specifically hoping players will form bonds with Jason and Lucia similar to what they felt for Arthur Morgan.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Set the Bar Too High, So Rockstar’s Diving In
Nelson mentioned that one of the most compelling aspects of Red Dead Redemption 2 was how Arthur didn’t just escort players through missions—through world interactions and quiet moments, players really got to “know” the character. Rockstar wants to bring that character depth to GTA 6, but without abandoning the dual-protagonist format entirely. That’s why they chose Jason and Lucia as a pair instead of returning to GTA V’s three-character ensemble.

More Than Just Bank Heists—Daily Life Together
The duo’s relationship will be built through plenty of quieter scenes—like them preparing to head out together, keeping each other company. Nelson specifically noted that after certain intense events when switching characters, players might not hear the other person’s voice, instead feeling their “worry” through their reactions. Rockstar believes these calm moments are exactly what make the subsequent violence and danger hit harder.
