30 years later, players transplanted the N64 version of “Tomb Raider” by themselves, so it was not unreasonable for the official to cancel it back then!

A video shows that “Tomb Raider” (Tomb Raider) is being ported to the Nintendo 64 console, making this classic work that has never been released in this version once again available on the N64! This video was uploaded to YouTube on April 13, 2026 by a user named Snake. It shows the ported version running on the Analogue 3D console and turning on the “Unleashed” overclocking setting. In the video, it can be seen that the game can enter the opening screen, main menu, and explore Croft Manor. Later, level content is also shown, including scenes such as Caves and Palace Midas.

Porting a TRX-based decompilation project

According to the developer notes, this N64 port is built on top of the TRX decompilation project developed by the Lost Artefacts team. TRX is an open source remake of “Tomb Raider I” and “Tomb Raider II”. It has been developed to version 1.5 and includes many optimizations and bug fixes.

With this foundation, developers were able to rebuild the original game and try to port it to different platforms.

Development progress is nearing completion

The project was developed using Tiny3D tools, which is a set of N64 3D function libraries based on libdragon. The developer said that the game has been basically completed, including music and most video content, and can even be completely contained on an N64 cartridge.

But it’s still some way off from completion.

Developers pointed out that the current version still has many problems, including errors, rendering and performance-related issues. Especially in larger scenes, game performance will still drop significantly.

This also means that a lot of optimization work still needs to be done in the future to achieve a stable game state.

It has not yet been determined whether it will be released publicly.

There is currently no information on whether the ported version will be publicly downloadable, and the developer has not stated the future plans of the project, whether it is only for personal research or will be further released.

In the past, there were attempts to port “Tomb Raider” to N64 through OpenLara, but in the end it was not completed, so the progress of this project has attracted a lot of attention.

The original version was planned to be released on N64 but was ultimately cancelled.

Tomb Raider originally launched on the Sega Saturn in October 1996, and later came to PlayStation and MS-DOS. Although there were rumors in the past that Core Design considered developing an N64 version, the plan ultimately failed to materialize due to the late acquisition of the development machine and the subsequent exclusive partnership with Sony.

This also allows this player-made transplant to fill in the historical gaps that were not completed back then to a certain extent.
