Pokémon Bank officials have confirmed the service will shut down on February 26, 2027, which means the primary pathway for transferring Pokémon from older Pokémon games to modern platforms is about to disappear. For players who’ve been raising Pokémon since the 3DS era or even earlier, this isn’t just a typical service closure — some beloved Pokémon might genuinely get left behind on older consoles.
What Happens to Legacy Pokémon?
Players have been able to transfer Pokémon from older games all the way to modern titles using Pokémon Bank together with Pokémon Home. This system supported transfers across multiple generations, so many long-time players have been storing their “heirloom Pokémon” in the cloud. The problem is, with Pokémon Bank shutting down, transferring between old and new games will become significantly harder.
Nintendo Hasn’t Left Everyone Hanging
Some older titles are being re-released on Nintendo Switch, such as Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen, which will eventually support Pokémon Home and let players bring some GBA-era Pokémon into modern systems. However, this clearly can’t fully replace Pokémon Bank’s original transfer functionality.
