AI Is Taking Over Steam! AI Game Ratio Hits Record High, But Are Players Willing to Pay?

Generative AI is rapidly transforming the gaming industry! The latest market research indicates that in 2026, for every 3 new games released on Steam, approximately 1 discloses the use of generative AI technology, with the proportion reaching 30.8%. However, while AI game numbers have surged, actual sales performance hasn’t kept pace — these titles even generally lag behind games that don’t use AI.

AI Games Are Exploding, But Sales Aren’t Following

According to research statistics, the proportion of new Steam games disclosing AI usage has climbed from 10.9% in 2024 and 19.9% in 2025 to 30.8% in 2026, indicating that AI is gradually becoming a part of the development process.

However, another analysis found that even after controlling for developer size, publisher, and game genre, games disclosing AI usage still have approximately 53% fewer player reviews compared to similar non-AI games, reflecting a clear gap in sales and player acceptance. Researchers believe players still have a certain “AI label effect” that affects purchase willingness.

Players Still Care More About Quality!

Despite the challenges AI games face in market performance, analysts believe AI has significantly lowered the barrier to game development, enabling more teams to quickly launch titles and keeping the number of new games on Steam growing. On the other hand, recent surveys of Steam players show that most aren’t completely against AI — they just care more about whether AI is used reasonably and whether the game itself is actually fun. In other words, AI may be unavoidable, but what truly determines a game’s success is still the quality of the game itself.
