Elder Scrolls Legendary Lore Was Just a Typo? Ex-Bethesda Dev Reveals Someone Typed the Year Wrong

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind players probably never imagined that one of the series’ most important world-building concepts might have started as a simple “typo in the date”. Former Bethesda writer and designer Kurt Kuhlmann recently discussed the series’ “Dragon Break” concept on the FRVR Podcast, stating he 100% believes there was an error in the internal timeline back then—someone probably accidentally typed the wrong year, causing a gap of about 3,000 years to suddenly appear in the timeline.

An Error That Later Became Official Lore?

This timeline issue dates back to The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall. Kuhlmann noted that someone created a timeline back then, and a ridiculously huge time gap appeared between two years, positioned exactly between the last date of the previous year and the first date of the next. In his view, this didn’t look like some mysterious historical event at all—it was more like someone simply entered the wrong date.

Wait—This Can Just Become Lore!

Here’s where it gets interesting. After series creator Michael Kirkbride discovered this timeline loophole, he saw the potential to develop it into world-building, and further proposed the concept of “Dragon Break”. Simply put, time itself was influenced by mysterious forces, causing different versions of history to simultaneously exist. This also provided a very convenient explanation for Daggerfall’s multiple endings—Bethesda could later treat all different player endings as “actually happened”.

Originally a Bug, Now Lore Players Have Studied for Decades?

This has become one of the most interesting aspects of The Elder Scrolls universe. Normally when games have multiple endings from a previous game, they have to hard-pick one as canon, but “Dragon Break” lets Bethesda stuff all possibilities into the same chaotic timeline. Kuhlmann even tried explaining these contradictions using a more “historical records are unreliable” approach, but The Elder Scrolls universe still ended up developing in an increasingly metaphysical direction. In other words, someone might have just typed the wrong year back then, and decades later, players are still researching what exactly happened in this universe.
