Hideo Kojima originally thought PHYSINT was the project he could create that had the best chance of becoming a hit. But this action espionage game, seen as a spiritual successor to Metal Gear Solid, also ended up facing partnership changes.
In an interview with The Washington Post, Kojima said he was quite shocked at the time—completely unexpected that PHYSINT would be on the list of potentially canceled projects.
30 Years of Cooperation Changed Overnight—That’s Just Reality
Kojima revealed he’s worked with Sony for many years and had relationships with executives like Ken Kutaragi and Kaz Hirai. But the situation has changed in recent years. Facing PlayStation withdrawing from the PHYSINT partnership, he says he wasn’t angry or sad, but rather realized “this is just reality.”
These comments have drawn renewed attention to how much protection long-term partnerships really have against the pressures of large-scale game development and funding.
Without Funding, They Could Collapse
Kojima also admitted that Kojima Productions is an independent studio. If there’s no partner providing funding, the studio itself could face closure. So Sony pulling out not only meant the game lost its original publishing arrangement—it could also affect the entire team’s future.
Kojima immediately started looking for new partners to save PHYSINT and keep studio members employed.
From Sony to Xbox—This Major Pivot Is Not Over Yet!
PHYSINT was first announced by PlayStation in 2024, with Sony executives joining Kojima to introduce the game, emphasizing it would further blend gaming and film. Now the partnership direction has shifted, with Xbox stepping in to support, creating a major turning point for the project.
