Bungie has announced changes to how Marathon will be updated, moving away from the stricter seasonal release cadence. The major update originally planned for September 22 has been delayed to December 8, with the developer citing the need for more testing and refinement to avoid rushing content to meet fixed deadlines.
Delayed but Packed with New Content
The delayed “Symbiosis” update is actually more substantial than originally planned, featuring new Runner skins, a permanent PvE experience, revamped Perimeter area, social spaces, a shooting range, and an experimental Team Deathmatch mode. Essentially, Bungie isn’t just pushing the update back—they’re using this time to restructure Marathon’s overall direction.

From Extraction Shooter to Destiny 2?
Most interestingly, the additions to Marathon are starting to remind players of Bungie’s other flagship title, Destiny 2. While Marathon originally launched as an extraction shooter, it’s now adding PvE, social spaces, a firing range, and TDM modes—leading players to joke that it’s becoming “more like Destiny 2.”
