After 17 Years, Finally Can Use Voice! League of Legends Team Voice Arrives, Riot Finally Not Afraid of Players Yelling at Each Other?

League of Legends is finally adding a feature players have been requesting for years. Riot Games announced that Patch 26.20 will introduce “Team Voice,” allowing players to communicate directly with their entire team without relying on typing or excessive pings. Riot acknowledged back in March that voice communication is already a standard in modern competitive games, but had been hesitant to implement team voice due to concerns about safety, harassment, and toxic player behavior.

Riot’s Biggest Fear: Toxic Voice Chat

This being League of Legends, the biggest issue with voice chat isn’t the microphone—it’s the person on the other end. Riot has added better noise cancellation, faster connections, and improved stability, while also strengthening behavior monitoring and moderation systems. Additionally, players must reach Honor Level 3 or higher to use the “speak” function. Players below the Honor threshold can still hear teammates’ voice chat, preventing direct impact on tactical communication. Simply put, Riot is controlling “who can speak” before handing out microphones.

Voice Changer Too? Now Even Teammates Won’t Know Who You Are!

Beyond team voice, Riot is also introducing “Voice Skins”, allowing players to modify their voice, with the studio emphasizing these voice effects must remain clear and understandable even during chaotic team fights. So going forward, teammates might not just hear “Go!” or “Retreat!”—they could hear a completely unrecognizable voice telling them to dive in. Of course, these features still come with behavior management tools, as Riot clearly doesn’t want team voice to become a five-person shouting match.

North America & Oceania First, Other Regions Coming Later

Team Voice will launch in Patch 26.20 starting with North America and Oceania, with Riot planning to expand to other regions based on actual performance. The studio says it will only continue expanding after confirming servers, technical support, and management systems are mature enough. In other words, players in other regions can’t grab the microphone just yet. But after waiting all these years for League of Legends to finally deliver team voice, the real test might not be “how good is the voice chat” but rather whether Riot can keep players alive long enough to hear the entire game.
