Xbox has officially announced the “Disc-to-Digital” program, allowing players to convert their physical Xbox games into digital licenses completely free of charge. Simply insert an eligible game disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console, and the system will add the corresponding game to your digital library. The company states that thousands of titles will be supported at launch, with more to follow.
Not Just “Play Different Ways” — PC and Cloud Gaming Too
The most convenient part of this feature is that the digitalized games can continue to be played on Xbox consoles, and eligible titles can also be accessed on PC through Xbox Play Anywhere. Some games will also support Xbox Cloud Gaming streaming. In other words, those Xbox discs collecting dust in your closet now have a chance to return to your game library.
But You Still Can’t Actually Throw Away the Discs
Here’s the catch. Players receive a digital license tied to the original physical disc, not a completely independent digital copy. If you lend the disc to a friend, the digital license goes with it. So if you’re thinking of digitizing your games and then selling the discs, Xbox hasn’t opened that door yet.
Xbox Is Now Paving a Way Forward for Physical Games
The program is expected to begin beta testing with Xbox Insiders on August 31st before gradually rolling out to more players. This timing is particularly interesting, given that Sony just announced they’ll stop producing physical disc versions of new PS5 games starting January 2028. As other manufacturers move toward all-digital, Xbox is going the opposite direction with a “we’ll digitize your discs for you” approach.
