Sweeney says AI’s biggest value isn’t just helping develop games—it’s the ability to continuously generate fresh content for massive multiplayer experiences. Everything from NPC interactions, quest design, world events, to player social experiences could be dynamically generated by AI, no longer relying on developers to painstakingly create every update. He believes this capability is exactly what could keep Destiny 2 and other live service games feeling fresh and retain players long-term.
But Players Aren’t So Optimistic
However, Sweeney’s comments quickly sparked controversy in the community. Many players believe Destiny 2’s recent problems aren’t about content production speed at all—they’re about gameplay design, update quality, and operational direction. Even if AI could generate more quests, it might not solve the game’s core issues.
Additionally, many developers worry that over-reliance on generative AI could affect creative quality and even impact how development teams work. Recently, several senior developers including David Gaider, former writer for Dragon Age, have publicly criticized current generative AI as still too immature to be considered a creative core.
