Another internal turmoil at a well-established major gaming company has been revealed in the gaming industry, and this time the finger is pointed directly at Bungie, which created “Destiny 2/Destiny 2”. Several former developers have recently been interviewed or anonymously reported that the experience of working at Bungie was “highly chaotic and dysfunctional.” They even described the internal environment as full of stress and management problems, and that some leaders have long deviated from the core value of the game: making players find it fun.
I seem to have forgotten why I make games
According to multiple former employees, Bungie gradually experienced internal decision-making confusion and communication problems during the long-term operation of “Destiny 2”. Some even described the overall atmosphere as having become a “toxic and dysfunctional work environment.” Sharper criticism pointed out that some senior executives gradually favored data, revenue and system adjustments in design and operation decisions, instead ignoring the actual gaming experience of players. In one sentence, the game is still there, but the fun thing is slowly disappearing.

The old problem has been buried for a long time: the feeling of stalling after success.
In fact, Bungie’s controversy didn’t just start recently. Since the launch of “Destiny 2”, the game has gone through multiple system redesigns, major content changes, and adjustments in operational direction, including the payment model, season pass system, and the design of gradually “recycling” content and then repackaging and selling it, which has caused dissatisfaction among the community. Coupled with the long-term fluctuations in content update rhythm and quality, the player community’s trust in Bungie has gradually declined. Now the statements of former employees have also allowed the outside world to look back at this period of history.

From “Masterpiece Studio” to Continuous Turmoil
Bungie was once regarded as the benchmark for first-person shooting and online service games. From the “Halo (Halo)” to the “Destiny” series, they have defined the market at different times. However, the situation has begun to change in recent years. As the studio operates independently and is acquired by Sony Interactive Entertainment, there have been reports of layoffs, project pressure and operational uncertainty. Even the core product “Destiny 2” has entered the final stage. Recent reports indicate that the company may face a new round of layoffs and organizational restructuring, making the overall future even more uncertain.

Amid all the technical, operational and management controversies, players’ concerns are actually quite simple. It’s not about how the company operates internally, nor whether the financial report numbers are good or not, but whether the game is fun or not. Judging from the descriptions of former employees, this was the most ignored, but also the most critical issue at Bungie.
