Is Microsoft really going to cut people off? The “South of Midnight” team is making a last ditch effort!

After news of a large-scale restructuring of Xbox was exposed recently, the future of many studios has also become the focus of players. These include Double Fine, which developed “Psychonauts (Crazy Mind/Brain Navigator)”, and Compulsion Games, which created “South of Midnight (Midnight South)”, both of which have been named by the outside world as potentially being affected. However, the latest news points out that the matter does not seem to have reached a conclusion yet.

According to foreign media reports, the relevant studios are currently negotiating with Microsoft, hoping to gain more time and resources to avoid being closed or significantly eliminated. After the news was exposed, many players who originally thought that the studio had been “sentenced to death” have regained hope.

Rumors of closure are flying everywhere, but the official decision has not been made yet.

Since Xbox launched a new round of organizational adjustments, news about various layoffs and the fate of the studio have continued to come out. In particular, Double Fine and Compulsion Games, which are known for their creative orientation, are considered by many to be on the high-risk list because the commercial scale of their works is not as large as that of large IPs such as “Call of Duty” or “Halo”.

The problem may not be the quality of the work

What’s interesting is that neither Double Fine nor Compulsion Games’ works are actually considered critical failures. “Psychonauts 2” received a lot of praise that year, and “South of Midnight” also received a lot of media praise in terms of its artistic style and world view design.

The problem is that Xbox is now facing overall business restructuring and cost control pressures. In this case, whether the studio can survive sometimes depends not only on game reviews, but also on investment return, development costs, and future business potential. This is also where many players feel helpless, because if the game is well done, it does not necessarily mean that the studio can live well.

What Xbox may be hurting most this time is player confidence

In recent years, Microsoft has spent tens of billions of dollars to acquire a large number of studios and publishers. At that time, many players believed that Xbox was finally ushering in a golden age. However, just a few years later, rumors of layoffs, restructuring and closures emerged one after another, which also made some players begin to question whether the original large-scale acquisition was to expand creative space, or whether it was just a number to include more teams in the financial statements. Relevant negotiations are still ongoing and the final results have not yet been released. But what is certain is that for many players, the last thing they want to see right now is a team that has worked hard to produce a good product and finally lost to the cost calculation on an Excel sheet.
