The Steam Controller obviously doesn’t have a speaker, but it actually screams when dropped.

Recently, some players discovered that the new version of Steam Controller actually hides a very baffling easter egg – when the handle is dropped, it actually has the opportunity to make a classic “horror movie” scream.

Yes, it’s the classic “Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!” The problem is, this handlebar doesn’t have a speaker at all!

Players accidentally discovered that Steam Controller “screams”

This hidden feature was first discovered by Reddit user RF3D19.

According to player descriptions, the handle was being used in Steam Big Picture Mode, and after falling onto a soft surface, the handle suddenly screamed. Later, RF3D19 also added the actual video and said that this Easter Egg does not trigger every time, and there seems to be a cooling time of about one minute.

Judging from the video, the effect is actually quite quiet, but it was enough for a bunch of players to start testing it with pillows and beds. Valve probably didn’t expect that in 2026 players would start deliberately throwing their hands to play.

The most outrageous thing is that this handlebar has no horn at all

What’s even more interesting is that the Steam Controller itself is not equipped with traditional speakers.

According to the current player analysis, this sound is not played from the speaker, but through the vibration motor inside the handle, that is, the vibration module produces a vibration sound similar to the sound effect.

The principle is a bit like high-end mobile phones or some advanced vibration systems, which can simulate simple sounds and sound effects through high-speed vibration. One day when Valve engineers were testing vibrations, they suddenly realized, “Hey, this can be called”, and then they just built it in.

Steam Controller just recently went back on sale

The new version of Steam Controller will be available again on May 4th.

Although Valve has not promoted it with much fanfare, this controller has actually attracted the attention of many PC players again recently, especially among the SteamOS ecosystem and Steam Deck players.

After all, Valve now seems to be increasingly trying to transform Steam from a mere platform into a complete hardware ecosystem.

But probably no one would have thought that the first feature that players are now hotly discussing is “will you scream if you throw the handle on the bed?”

What Valve is best at is weird details like this

In fact, veteran players all know that Valve has always liked to hide strange Easter eggs in hardware and games.

From the previous “Portal” and “Half-Life” series to Steam Deck and Steam Big Picture Mode, the Valve engineering team has always had an atmosphere of “I’ve done it anyway, so why not play around with it”.

And this time the screams of Steam Controller are probably an extension of this culture.
