Another quite exaggerated work has recently appeared in the retro modification circle. A modding project called “Kawaii” has successfully reduced the Nintendo Wii to almost the size of a keychain and can actually run games.
Modification channel Macho Nacho Productions host Tito recently showed off this ultra-small console and described it as perhaps “one of the craziest console modifications I have ever seen.”
Use real Wii hardware, not an emulator
The most exaggerated thing about “Kawaii” is that it is not a simulator device, but is actually built using the Wii host chip. Tito points out in the video that the machine was adapted directly from a physical Wii motherboard and successfully compressed to keychain-level dimensions while still retaining full operational capabilities.

In other words, this isn’t a Raspberry Pi running an emulator, but a real Wii.
According to previously public information, the body size of “Kawaii” is approximately 60x60x16mm, using a CNC aluminum alloy shell design, and adding laser engraving and RGB LED visual effects.
The overall size is even smaller than some keychains, and when placed next to a Dreamcast or Nintendo 3DS, the size difference is quite exaggerated.

Supports GameCube controller and audio and video output

Although it is very small, “Kawaii” still retains many functions.
The device uses magnetic pogo pin contacts to provide power, audio, video and controller connections. It also supports a dedicated base that allows players to connect GameCube controllers and output composite/component graphics and stereo audio.
To put it simply, it is not just about turning on the phone, but it is really designed towards a complete host.
However, compressing the Wii chip to this extent also brings heat dissipation issues. Tito said that this device generates a lot of heat during operation, so additional fans are still needed to help cool down during actual testing.
Even so, for the modding community, the fact that it can achieve this size is quite amazing.
The project continues to be developed from 2024 to the present
“Kawaii” was first announced in 2024 and was developed by @WeskMods and @YveltalGriffin with the goal of creating the world’s smallest functional Wii console. Subsequent development continues, including the anode aluminum metal casing, internal PCB, base and circuit design, etc. are gradually completed.
The development team has also stated that “Kawaii” is a difficult modification project and will not release a complete kit or detailed assembly instructions. Players still need to do a lot of soldering, PCB assembly and Wii motherboard cutting by themselves.
Not something that ordinary players can easily copy
The developer emphasized that “Kawaii” is not an entry-level game modification work.
In addition to the motherboard trimming that needs to be handled by yourself, the Thundervolt PCB, internal PCB and Dock PCB must also be assembled. The overall difficulty is much higher than that of ordinary portable modification machines.
To a certain extent, this is more like showing off hardware engineering skills, rather than the level where ordinary players can build one by themselves on the weekend.
