Resident Evil Requiem Leak Hints at Mercenaries Mode Comeback

Capcom has used this playbook for years: launch the base game first, then roll out fan-favorite modes through updates. A new leak now suggests Resident Evil Requiem files include clues tied to Mercenaries Mode, and many players believe the franchise’s most beloved side mode is on the way back.

Datamining Finds Countdown Audio That Sounds Exactly Like Mercenaries

According to dataminer SYRKOV, multiple unused audio tracks were found in Resident Evil Requiem. One clip features a very clear countdown-style clock effect, which strongly resembles the time-warning cues used in past Mercenaries modes.

Veteran fans instantly recognize that sound—the kind that signals time is running out and sends the pressure through the roof.

The timing is notable. Director Koshi Nakanishi previously teased a “surprise mini-game” for the May update. Many already suspected Mercenaries, and this newly discovered audio has only strengthened that theory.

What Is Mercenaries Mode? For Many Players, It’s Better Than the Main Campaign

Mercenaries Mode first appeared in 1999’s Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. Its core loop is simple and addictive: defeat enemies under strict time limits, chain kills for points, and push for higher rankings.

The mode has stayed popular for years for one reason: story mode gives you fear, Mercenaries gives you power. That switch from survival horror to aggressive score-chasing is part of what makes Resident Evil special.

If Tofu Returns, Capcom Really Gets the Fans

The leak also mentions a possible return for Tofu. This legendary oddball started as a collision-test model in Resident Evil 2, then became an iconic hidden-mode character after players embraced it.

Players have already spotted a Tofu easter egg in the ruined R.P.D. station inside Resident Evil Requiem. If Mercenaries does return, adding Tofu to the playable roster would feel like the natural next step.
