The Xbox App has added a new function to turn the controller directly into a mouse, making the PC handheld console finally easier to use!

The new feature Microsoft is testing in the Xbox App Insider version this time is the “Gamepad Cursor”, which turns the left joystick directly into a mouse pointer. The parts that used to be “can only be clicked with the mouse” can now be solved with the handle, without the embarrassment of switching back to the desktop or clicking the trackpad. This feature is very simple in nature, but it just makes up for the pain points of Windows handheld machines.

From “usable” to “easy to use”, the Xbox handheld console begins to take shape

This feature does not exist alone, but is part of the entire Xbox ecosystem. Microsoft has previously been promoting the so-called Xbox full-screen experience (which is now gradually becoming “Xbox mode”), with the goal of making Windows 11 look like a console system on a handheld device. Now add the Gamepad Cursor and it’s basically almost perfect.

Specifically prepared for handheld consoles, but PC players will benefit too

This feature is currently tailor-made for Windows handhelds like ASUS ROG Ally, but practically everyone who operates a PC with a handle will benefit. Especially in Big Picture, emulators, or non-Steam gaming environments, the demand for mice has actually always existed, but there was no good solution before, and now Microsoft has simply done this directly and officially.

Still in the testing phase, but we are on the right track

Currently, Gamepad Cursor is only open to Xbox Insider testing, and users can enable it through Game Bar settings or the “Try out Gamepad Cursor” portal. The function is not yet final, but it is in the right direction – Microsoft is moving the Windows handheld experience towards a truly “console-based” experience.

PC handheld hardware has long been powerful enough, but the operation is always stuck in desktop logic. Now this kind of update one by one is actually more important than the specification upgrade. The Gamepad Cursor seems like a small feature, but it means Microsoft is starting to get serious about handheld experiences.
