At The Game Awards (TGA) in 2024, Capcom announced a new “Onimusha” game – “Onimusha Sword Way”, which brings the classic series that has been dusted for many years back into players’ sight. Since “New Onimusha” in 2006, the series has fallen into silence for nearly 20 years. This return not only excited fans, but also caused the price of the old American version of “Onimusha” PS2 games to soar!
The price of the US version of “Onimusha” on PS2 has skyrocketed, but the digital version is still the best choice
According to market trends, the price of the PS2 version of the “Onimusha” series of games is rising in the second-hand market, especially for later releases. For example:
- The prices of the American versions of “Onimusha: Warlords” (2001) and “Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny” (2002) remain between $10 and $15, with little change.
- “Onimusha 3: Demon Siege” (2004) has climbed to $25-$30.
- The second-hand market price of “New Onimusha” (2006) has even soared to $60, and some transactions are even close to $80!
But thankfully, the prices of the digital versions of Xbox and PlayStation remain normal. For example:
- The remake of “Onimusha: Warlords” launched in 2018 is still on sale for $20 on the Xbox and PlayStation stores.
- The remake of “Onimusha 2” will be launched on May 23, with an official price of $30.
- For players who want to experience old games, the digital version is still the most cost-effective option, while collectors of physical versions have to face the reality of skyrocketing prices. If you only accept the Japanese version, just pretend I didn’t tell you, because there are too many Japanese versions and they are too cheap!
Capcom fired two bombs: “Onimusha 2” remake + new work “Onimusha: The Way of the Sword”
Capcom not only announced “Onimusha Sword: Way” at the TGA at the end of last year, but also officially revealed the “Onimusha 2” remake at this year’s State of Play event, which will be released on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC on May 23, 2025.
“Onimusha Sword: Way” is scheduled to be released in 2026. The official has released the first trailer produced by the in-game engine, making it one of the most discussed games in TGA 2024. This has further ignited players’ enthusiasm for the series, causing the market prices of old games to continue to rise.
Looking forward to more remasters? Will “Onimusha 3” and “Onimusha New” return?
At present, Capcom only plans to launch a remake of “Onimusha 2”, which means that players who want to play “Onimusha 3” or “New Onimusha” can only choose to buy them at high prices on the second-hand market, or wait for the official announcement of subsequent porting or remake plans.
With the upcoming release of a new game, the “Onimusha” craze is being reignited! Perhaps at Summer Game Fest in 2025, Capcom will bring more news about “Onimusha: The Way of the Sword”, or even remake plans for “Onimusha 3” or “New Onimusha”.
For players who want to complete the series, now may be the worst time, because prices are still soaring. But if we can wait for further official plans, there may be better choices in the future. Are you willing to buy it now at a high price, or wait for the official remake?
