Legendary game composer and developer Yuzo Furuzo is currently busy completing his new shooter “Earthion”, which will be released on the Sega MD and other modern platforms. But even in the final sprint of development, Koyuzo has already begun to conceive of plans for the next game!
On the social platform, he revealed to his fans:
“It may be a little too early to tell, but we are already thinking about game plans after “Earthion”. Of course, it all depends on the sales performance of “Earthion”. We will go all out!”
This means that if Earthion sells well enough, Yuzo’s studio Ancient may develop another new game – but if sales are not as expected, this plan may be shelved.
“Earthion”: The retro shooter returns, first on modern platforms and then on Mega Drive!
“Earthion” is a classic side-scrolling shooting game (Shmup) developed by Ancient Yuzo’s Ancient Studio. The studio has created:
- “Sonic Master System Edition”
- Story of Thor / Beyond Oasis
- 《Gotta Protectors》（3DS）
This time “Earthion” is based on the retro Mega Drive / Genesis style, and adopts the music and graphics style of the 16-bit era, but it will be released on modern platforms first and then ported back to Mega Drive! This goes against the grain of how many retro-style games are developed, but it’s exciting news for fans of SEGA’s 16-bit console.
What will be the next game?
Although Gu Yuzo did not clearly reveal the type of next game he planned, considering his development background and fans’ expectations, several possibilities have emerged:
- It may be a new action game – Koyuzo has participated in the soundtracks of “Streets of Rage” and “Revenge of Shinobi”. The action styles of these two games are deeply loved by players, and his team may try to develop similar retro action games.
- Possibly more 16-bit style shooters – if Earthion is a hit, Ancient may create more in the same genre, such as a more ambitious bullet hell shooter, or even a 2.5D evolution.
- It may be a completely different new IP – Ancient has developed a variety of game types, including RPG (“Quake”) and tower defense games (“Gotta Protectors”), so the next work may also break away from shooting games and explore a new style.
