Fan developers create a retro version of daytona usa that recreates the style of virtua: If “Daytona USA” was not released in 1994, but came out earlier in 1992, what would the visual style be like?

If “Daytona USA” was not released in 1994, but came out earlier in 1992, what would the visual style be like? This question inspired independent developer Frogbull, so he decided to give this classic racing game a try“Virtua Racing style overhaul”

Is this a 1992 Daytona USA?
Frogbull recently uploaded a roughly 4-minute video on YouTube showing off the results of his transformation. In the film, he completed a race on the “Three-Seven Speedway”, but the biggest difference from the original version is:

  • The game screen has changed from the original textured polygons to simpler flat polygons.
  • Not just vehicles, but all environment modeling and UI have also been streamlined
  • The overall visual style is closer to the 1992 Sega masterpiece “Virtua Racing”
  • This transformation makes the game look like an arcade game launched two years ago, as if it has returned to the era of Sega Model 1 arcade hardware, rather than the finely textured 3D model of the Model 2 era.

Is this the 32X version? Or an arcade version?
Since the developer did not provide many technical details, various discussions began in the message area below the video. Some players speculate that this may be some kind of SEGA 32X technology demonstration, but considering the smoothness and resolution of the game, a more reasonable explanation is:

This is a modified version based on the arcade version “Daytona USA”, which simulates the style of Model 1 by replacing the texture technology.

The developer himself said that this was just his personal experiment, and the goal was to “imagine what it would be like if Sega launched Daytona USA on Model 1 hardware.”

The perfect combination of nostalgia and creativity
This fan makeover not only shows the malleability of “Daytona USA”, but also makes veteran players rethink the evolution of Sega racing games in the 1990s. From “Virtua Racing” to “Daytona USA” to the more advanced “Sega Rally” and “Scud Race”, these games have witnessed the development of arcade 3D technology.

While this current version of Virtua Racing-style Daytona USA is merely a technology showcase, it’s certainly reminiscent of the golden age of Sega arcades in the ’90s. Will you want to try this revamped version of Daytona USA for yourself? Or do you prefer the original texture style? Feel free to share your views!
