Final Fantasy: War of the Visions JP Shuts Down on May 28 With No Offline Version

Square Enix and gumi have confirmed that the Japanese service for Final Fantasy: War of the Visions will end on May 28. The title launched in Japan on iOS and Android in November 2019, followed by a global release in March 2020. The international version already shut down on May 30, 2025, so this closure effectively ends the game’s live service lifecycle in all regions.

The team considered an offline version, then abandoned it

Producer Watanabe said the developers genuinely explored an offline edition so players could preserve the experience. The core issue is that the game’s identity depends heavily on online systems, including PvP, guild structures, and player-driven interactions. Remove those pillars and the remaining product no longer reflects what the game was designed to be. In practical terms, that means player accounts, progression, and accumulated resources will disappear with the servers.

Memory-focused replacements are planned, not playable preservation

As a substitute, Square Enix plans to release a special recap video and a commemorative booklet. This is now a common shutdown pattern in mobile gaming: when a live system cannot be kept playable, publishers preserve lore and nostalgia artifacts instead. For long-term players, however, those materials are emotional closure rather than functional preservation, especially for users who invested years into roster building and event cycles.

Live updates continue until the final day, with an end-of-service roadmap

The official notice also says in-game events will continue through shutdown day, and a dedicated site has gone live with the final roadmap. For remaining JP players, this is the last window to finish unfinished goals and say goodbye on their own terms. Across SEA, this closure is another reminder that live-service value can vanish instantly, which will likely push more players toward titles with stronger archival or offline continuity plans.
