Nintendo Brings Back Boxed Game-Key Cards as Pokemon Legends Z-A Expansion Joins the Format

Do you remember the Pokémon Scarlet and Violet DLC The Indigo Disk? When Nintendo handed out a bare “digital shell” box with it, the internet absolutely roasted the company. Nobody expected history to repeat itself so soon — yet here we are again, because the Pokémon Legends: Z-A expansion is about to run the exact same playbook.

Another Empty Box

The catch is the same one that made the Indigo Disk such a talking point: you need to own Pokémon Legends: Z-A on the console before the download code for this expansion will do anything. Whether you are on Switch 1 or Switch 2, the rule is the same — buy the base game, then the DLC code unlocks on top of it. The boxed edition in question is really just a game-key card in a sleeve, sold so that the players who want the package on their shelf can have it.

It is a strange kind of souvenir. You pay full price for the privilege of owning a box you cannot play, and the “physical” copy in your collection stays empty for the entire life of the product. That said, it is not without precedent. The Indigo Disk eventually did get a physical release, and even then parts of the content still had to be downloaded. Whether the Z-A expansion follows the same route, or doubles down on the download-code format, is still an open question.
