Epic Games Prizes AI-Assisted Game Jams With $50,000 Developer Grants

While the games industry is still arguing itself hoarse over generative AI, Epic Games has decided to go the other way and throw cash at developers who use it. The company has announced the “AI MegaJam”, a game development contest running from 12 to 15 November 2026, with a total prize pool of US$65,000 and follow-on development grants of up to US$50,000 for standout entries. While plenty of players are busy boycotting AI-generated content, Epic is paying people to embrace it — and clearly it is not shy about the controversy.

Code, Art and NPC Dialogue All Count

Under the published rules, entrants must build in Unreal Engine or UEFN and are free to fold AI tools into the production pipeline: generating art assets, running AI coding agents, or building NPCs that talk to players through large language models. The contest also carries special awards, including best AI development journal and best AI conversational NPC game, each worth US$2,500. Crucially, the US$50,000 is not a participation cheque — it is reserved for the strongest entries so developers can keep polishing their games after the jam ends.

Six-Fingered Promo Art?

The irony is hard to miss: Epic’s promo art for the event appears to feature a character with six fingers, a classic tell of AI-generated imagery, sitting right next to a slogan urging entrants to make AI games and pocket US$50,000. The company has been doubling down on AI in development too — CEO Tim Sweeney has publicly stated that Epic is rebalancing its team structures to use AI to lift development efficiency.

Outside coverage has been unimpressed, arguing that game jams already prove small teams can build excellent games in days, with or without AI. Whether AI MegaJam produces something genuinely impressive or simply floods the marketplace with the “AI slop” players complain about will come down to the entrants. For Southeast Asian developers, though, the prize pool and the free UEFN toolchain make this one of the cheapest ways to test an AI-assisted production pipeline while keeping a real shot at funding — a bet worth making even if you expect to argue with the promo art afterwards.
