While everyone is talking about 4K, ray tracing and AI frame generation, some people still choose to go back and put the game on a color screen that is only a few inches in size. Recently, a new game called “Last Crown Warriors” has quietly emerged in the retro gamer circle. It is directly locked on the Game Boy and Game Boy Color platforms. It takes a mixed route of action and tactics. The source of inspiration will be mentioned to you at the beginning: Zelda and the Legend of Mana series.
This time the development teamA free trial version has been released that can be downloaded, anyone with an emulator or flashcard can run it now!

Action meets real-time tactics, this time it’s not just about killing monsters
“Last Crown Warriors” is described as an “action strategy” game. The core of the gameplay is not just to rush in and clear monsters, but to take into account the battlefield rhythm and map control at the same time.
Players play the role of a team composed of warriors with different abilities, advancing on the map, defeating enemies, and challenging the guardians at each level. The goal is to seize the base and expand the sphere of influence. The way to occupy a base is very intuitive, just plant the flag, but the system will not let you do it once and for all, because the influence will decline over time, and new threats will appear in the old area, forcing you to go back and clear the area.
This design makes the rhythm of the game no longer just push forward, but becomes a back-and-forth map battle, which is actually quite rare on a platform like Game Boy Color.

The Zelda flavor is very strong, and the Secret of Mana series is behind it
It can be seen from the pixel style and character movements that the developers’ research on the handheld version of Zelda is more than just a superficial tribute. The character’s slashing, movement rhythm, and enemy configuration all have the shadow of an old-school action RPG.
At the same time, the flavor of the Legend of Mana series that favors group combat and skill differentiation has also been stuffed into the squad system. Different warriors have their own ability positioning, so that on the battlefield you are not just “I conquer the world alone”, but you start to think about team coordination and advancement routes.
Small team, big plan, three people support the entire kingdom
The team behind this game is small but has a clear division of labor. The design and programming were handled by Imanolea, the pixel art was handed over to Seiyouh, and the music and sound effects were handled by potatoTeto.
“Last Crown Warriors” is actually not a sudden project. It went on Kickstarter to raise funds as early as December 2022, and finally received 710 backers, with the total amount reaching 41,939 euros. So far, the physical version seems to be on the way, and the team continues to release Early Access versions through Ko-Fi and Kickstarter to allow backers to play new content first.

The free trial version is online, and there is a new battlefield for old consoles
The demo released this time is completely free. As long as you have a Game Boy emulator or flash card, you can run it directly. The trial content covers an area in the early stage of the game called “Button Plains”, which basically allows you to experience the core gameplay of a complete set of actions and tactics.
For retro players, the feeling that “someone is serious about making new games for native hardware” is already an attraction in itself.
