The 2004 movie-based game Shrek 2 is reportedly getting a remaster! The news comes from a Microsoft Store page that was listed early then quickly pulled down, showing that the classic game will be handled by Aspyr. The remaster won’t just feature improved graphics – it’s also adding 4K resolution, upgraded textures, enhanced UI, and improved cutscenes, bringing Shrek and his friends back to the Far Far Away kingdom adventure. For players who experienced the PS2, Xbox, or GameCube versions back in the day, this news is like suddenly seeing their childhood memories in HD, with even the swamp getting a renovation.
This Time You Can Even Mess Around Online With Friends!
The original was primarily an action game combining puzzle-solving and mini-games, where players could control Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, and other characters, using each character’s abilities to progress through levels. One of the most notable upgrades in the remaster is support for up to four-player co-op, and it’s not limited to the same couch anymore – players can choose local co-op, online multiplayer, or even mix both methods to play together!
Aspyr has become known for bringing Dreamcast and classic console games to modern platforms in recent years. Their previous work includes cult classics like Star Wars: Jedi Knight II – Jedi Outcast and Dreamcast’s Sonic Adventure, making them a natural choice for handling the Shrek 2 remaster. While the official release date and platforms haven’t been confirmed yet, the sudden appearance and disappearance of the Microsoft Store listing suggests an announcement could be coming soon.
Given the massive success of recent game remasters and the enduring popularity of the Shrek franchise, this could be another hit for Universal and Microsoft. Then again, with GTA6 still dominating headlines, maybe Shrek’s swamp is the perfect antidote to all that hype – after all, what’s more entertaining than watching an ogre mess up a kingdom while cracking jokes?
