GTA VI NPC Dialogues Get Special Treatment! Rockstar Forms Dedicated Writing Team for Ultra-Realistic Open World

Grand Theft Auto VI hasn’t even been officially released yet, but Rockstar Games is already showing players the scale of this masterpiece. According to the development team in an interview with LOVE magazine, Rockstar has formed a dedicated writing team specifically for NPC dialogues, so players walking through the city can hear various street conversations that match the local atmosphere!

Rockstar’s Senior Vice President of Narrative Rupert Humphries said the team isn’t just responsible for NPC dialogue—they’ve also brought in advertising and comedy creators from New York, Los Angeles, and London to specifically craft media content and humor elements within the game. In other words, when a player walks down a street, there’s already a team of people who have put thought into those passing conversations.

Running Past is Just Background Noise, But Stopping to Listen is a Different Story!

James Horton, Open World Writing Director for GTA VI, said this time the team has invested more scale in world-building than ever before, even establishing a dedicated production team for NPC dialogues. He emphasized there’s no shortcut to building such a world—whether players quickly run through busy streets hearing fragments of conversation, or stop to listen carefully, every dialogue should feel natural and believable. Horton even believes there’s no real “background” in the game—what’s background is simply something the player hasn’t noticed at that moment; when a player focuses on an NPC, that character should have their own personality and story. This also means those seemingly ordinary NPCs on the streets aren’t just there for walking, standing guard, and providing missions.

Even Ads and Comedy are Custom-Made

Beyond NPC conversations, the team will also present the unique culture of the fictional region Leonida (inspired by Florida) through ads, comedy, and in-game media. From street billboards to TV shows, every detail is carefully designed to make players feel they’re in a world that operates realistically.

Grand Theft Auto VI is expected to release in 2025. Stay tuned!
