Sony has officially announced that the standard PS5 will get a brand new Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) technology. This is an AI-based upscaling solution, similar in concept to PSSR on the PS5 Pro, using neural networks to enhance image details and stability. Sony says PSSR remains the premium option on PS5 Pro, while QSSR is a version tailored for standard PS5 performance.
Marvel’s Wolverine Becomes One of the First Beneficiaries
Currently, only two games support QSSR: Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei, both have received updates allowing standard PS5 players to choose the new QSSR graphics mode. Insomniac says QSSR makes Marvel’s Wolverine’s environmental details clearer and more stable, while Sucker Punch says the technology improves detail rendering for characters and environments.

But PS5 Pro’s PSSR Is Still Better
Of course, Sony didn’t suddenly turn the standard PS5 into a PS5 Pro. Since the standard PS5 lacks the dedicated machine learning hardware of the PS5 Pro, QSSR’s processing capabilities are still limited. The Verge cites Digital Foundry’s early testing, noting that standard PS5 with QSSR outputs closer to upscaled 1440p, while PS5 Pro can more easily output at higher resolutions — so there’s still a gap between the two.
