Has Bad Optimization Become the Norm? Tech Team Slams AAA Publishers for Passing Costs to Players!

In recent years, many AAA game releases have been criticized for launching with frame drops, stuttering, and blurry graphics. Players have gradually adopted the habit of “if it won’t run, upgrade your graphics card.” However, independent tech research team Threat Interactive recently released a 2-hour in-depth analysis video that directly points the finger at game developers, urging players to stop paying for poor game optimization by upgrading hardware and instead demand that publishers make better games.

“Hardware Upgrades” Shouldn’t Replace Code Optimization

Threat Interactive analyzed modern game rendering pipelines and argued that many games have fallen into a vicious cycle of “hardware upgrades replacing code optimization.”

The team pointed out that while some titles using Unreal Engine 5 pursue higher graphics quality through technologies like Nanite, TAA, and TSR, they also bring increased GPU burden, ghosting, blurring, and performance degradation. They also noted that in some cases, Blueprint’s execution efficiency is lower than C++, and certain DirectX 11 implementations even outperform specific DirectX 12 implementations in certain scenes.

High Graphics Quality Doesn’t Mean Low Performance!

The team cited Ghost of Tsushima‘s improved SMAA anti-aliasing technology as an example of maintaining visual clarity while reducing performance overhead.

They also mentioned examples like Silent Hill 2 Remake and Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, noting that improving transparency and vegetation rendering could boost performance in some scenes by 13% to 40%. Classic titles like Crysis 3 and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain have already proven that graphics quality and performance can coexist.

Players Should Demand Better Games, Not Expensive GPUs

Threat Interactive finally urged that if players continue to accept the phenomenon of “poor launch optimization, fixed later,” publishers will become increasingly reliant on hardware upgrades and screen compensation technologies while ignoring the importance of fundamental optimization. The team believes that when players start refusing to compromise on low-quality optimization, the market will have a chance to force large developers to invest more resources in improving game performance instead of putting all the pressure on players’ PCs.
