The FBI recently arrested a 21-year-old man for allegedly disguising a Trojan program as a Steam game, luring players to download and install it, and then taking advantage of the victim’s cryptocurrency wallet and account information, stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of virtual currency. After the incident was exposed, it also once again sounded the alarm for PC players against malware.
Free games are just a pretense, the real target is players’ wallets
According to the indictment, the suspects allegedly used seemingly normal Steam games or related downloads as bait to guide players to install programs containing Trojans. Once executed, the malware secretly steals browser data, account passwords, and cryptocurrency wallet information. Victims often don’t realize they have been tricked until their assets are transferred. Due to the anonymity and irreversible nature of cryptocurrency transactions, once funds are transferred out, it is very difficult to recover them, which has also led to an increase in such attacks in recent years.
Steam is not poisoned, the source of player downloads is the key!
After the incident was exposed, many players mistakenly believed that the Steam platform itself was hacked. However, the current focus of the case is that the suspects allegedly used Steam games as a medium to spread Trojans, not that the Steam system itself was compromised. In recent years, many hackers have used fake updates, malicious modules or disguised installers to carry out attacks. If players download files from unknown sources at will, even if there is no problem with the game itself, their computers may still become the next victim.
It can only be said that the most dangerous thing now may not be that the game is too difficult, but that before pressing the download button, it is best to confirm whether you are installing the game or give away your wallet together.
