When Capcom unveiled Resident Evil Veronica at the Summer Game Fest, many players’ first reaction was: “Wait, is this another first-person game?” After all, almost the entire trailer was shown from the protagonist’s perspective, leading fans to assume Capcom would continue the direction of Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village. But now the official answer is here—and fans really got fooled by the trailer.

First-Person Was Just a Smoke Screen
According to producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, while the trailer heavily featured first-person footage, Resident Evil Veronica will actually be a full third-person game—and unlike Resident Evil Requiem, it will not offer first/third-person toggle. The studio revealed they used first-person perspective mainly to hide the protagonist’s identity and build suspense, wanting players to get a bigger surprise when Claire Redfield finally appeared. The surprise delivered, but it also had players thinking the entire game would be a first-person horror experience.

Players Are Actually Relieved
Following the reveal, many players expressed relief. Since the original Resident Evil Code: Veronica is a beloved classic in the series, many believe third-person fits the remake better—and aligns with the gameplay style of the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4 remakes. Reddit has been flooded with “Thanks Capcom” and “Third-person is the way” comments.

It seems Capcom has found a winning formula: mainline entries go first-person for immersion, while remakes stick to third-person action and survival horror. Now that Resident Evil Veronica is confirmed as third-person, it looks like Claire won’t be accompanying players through Raccoon Island in first-person after all.
