After 27 Years, Spyro Finally Can Fly Freely!

Spyro is finally taking off—and this time it’s not a limited stage or special ability. At Xbox Games Showcase 2026, Toys for Bob officially revealed Spyro: A Realm Beyond, the first brand-new authentic entry in the Spyro series in nearly 18 years, bringing something that has longtime fans excited.

After 27 Years as a Purple Dragon, Finally Flying Like One!

For players who’ve played since the original, this is almost the series’ most dreamlike evolution. While Spyro has always been a dragon, most of the time he could only glide, with true free flight usually only appearing in specific flight stages or during special abilities. Now the team has finally decided to let players take to the skies anytime.

More Than a Nostalgia Trip—Team Wants Series’ Biggest Evolution

According to the development team, free flight isn’t just adding a new button—it’s the core design philosophy. Studio head Paul Yan said the team’s biggest goal is letting players truly experience what it’s like to be a dragon, able to soar from ground to sky and freely travel between map areas. This change is so significant that the team “rebuilt the entire world around flight.”

It’s Not About Graphics—It’s About That One Feature

In other words, this isn’t about adding flight after building the map—flight is the core gameplay from the start. Players can dive, climb, make sharp turns, using speed and altitude to explore the world—no longer just jumping from platform to platform. Beyond the flight system, Spyro: A Realm Beyond also brings a new story. This time, Spyro is trapped in a strange land and encounters an invading force called Scavs. Players must make new allies to stop the world from being changed. The team emphasizes the new game isn’t just selling nostalgia—it wants to evolve the series to a new stage.
