Insomniac Games latest title Marvels Wolverine is generating discussion again, but this time is not about violence or character reveals. The gameplay direction has been officially confirmed: it is NOT an open-world game. The developer has clearly stated the title will be a linear single-player action adventure, making a direct break from the open-world design of Marvels Spider-Man.
Not Being Open-World Was Intentional Design
According to Insomniac, the team never planned for Wolverine to be a sandbox or open world from the start. Instead, they wanted to create a more tight-paced experience, letting players ride the narrative like a rollercoaster all the way through. Game Director Mike Daly mentioned they wanted to deliver a high-intensity, high-tension linear solo adventure, with mission design matching that pace rather than letting players freely tick off map markers. Simply put, no wandering around the map collecting things, instead throwing you straight into Logan bloody life series.

Why Not Like Spider-Man
Many players assumed that since it is from the same studio making Marvel titles, Wolverine might follow Spider-Man open-world approach. But the two characters move very differently. Spider-Man can web-swing through the entire city, while Wolverine is more of a force through type. That is why the team chose to focus on level-based progression instead, fitting the character own violent, linear, close-combat style.
