For emulator enthusiasts and game preservation communities, legally backing up your physical game collection has always been a technical hurdle. A new tool called OmniDrive aims to change that—by modifying certain Blu-ray drive firmware, regular PC Blu-ray drives can now read multiple gaming disc formats including Nintendo Wii, GameCube, and Xbox 360.
Players may no longer need special hardware to back up their legitimate game collections—just use an existing Blu-ray drive in their PC.
Firmware Mods Break Console Disc Restrictions
OmniDrive is essentially a firmware mod targeting Hitachi-LG Data Storage drives with MediaTek MT1959 chips, enabling them to read custom console disc formats that standard PC drives can’t normally access.
Many consoles use proprietary disc formats. Previously, players needed special hardware or modified consoles to dump games. OmniDrive simplifies this process significantly with this new solution.
GameCube, Wii & Xbox 360 Support
Supported platforms include GameCube, Wii, and Xbox 360—players can directly dump disc content for personal backups. Many retro games are now 10-20+ years old and facing preservation concerns, making such tools increasingly valuable in the scene.
Best part: players can finally create backups from their own legitimate discs instead of searching for questionable download sources.
PS3, PS4, PS5 Supported—But Stay Encrypted
OmniDrive also supports PS3, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Wii U—but these platforms still have encryption that limits practical use. OmniDrive solves the media format issue, not the encryption protection itself.
Dreamcast GD-ROM Also on the List
Surprisingly, Sega Dreamcast GD-ROM is also on the supported list. However, officials note that currently only the Low Density Area can be read—full disc dumping isn’t possible just yet.
For Dreamcast preservationists, existing dumping solutions still can’t be fully replaced at this stage.
Compatibility Depends on Your Blu-Ray Model
While OmniDrive looks promising, not all Blu-ray drives work. Only certain Hitachi-LG Data Storage models with MediaTek MT1959 chips are compatible.
According to TechSpot reporting, the Disc Preservation Project Wiki has compiled a full compatibility list—players should check if their PC’s Blu-ray drive is supported before attempting any firmware modifications.
For the game preservation community, OmniDrive represents an exciting development. Following the rise of cartridge dumping tools in recent years, even disc-based platforms like Wii, GameCube, and Xbox now have more accessible backup solutions, making it easier for legitimate owners to preserve their game libraries.
