Capcom’s latest survival horror work “Resident Evil Requiem” (Resident Evil 9: Requiem) is selling like hotcakes around the world, but the Japanese version has accidentally set off another wave of controversy due to its censorship! Many players pointed out that the harmonization method of this game is “too rough”, and even complained that it looks like a texture error, which seriously damages the immersion!

Japan’s game censorship system has always been strict, and previous works in the series have reduced the level of gore or adjusted the performance, but usually still try to keep the graphics as natural as possible. However, the processing method of “Resident Evil Requiem” this time is obviously different – some bloody scenes are directly covered with black material, as if someone poured a paint bucket on the screen. Many players said, “Instead of doing this, it is better to just code it.”

Not only the console version, the PC Japanese version is also affected

What confuses players even more is that even the Japanese version of the content on the PC platform is subject to the same level of restrictions. Players pointed out that there is a plot section in the game that involves putting artificial organs into corpses to resurrect them. This was originally an important scene to enhance the horror atmosphere. However, although the Japanese version retains the model, the corpse and organs are covered with a strange black coating.

The result is that instead of being more “gentle”, the picture becomes more abrupt. Some players even described this effect as like a graphics card failure or texture loading failure, making people instantly out of action.

Player: Capcom really took things easy this time

The community generally believes that the Japanese classification system is indeed very restrictive, but Capcom has actually used many more clever methods in the past, such as lens transfer, picture blur, or light and shadow adjustments, to maintain a scary atmosphere while complying with regulations.

In contrast, the black texture method of “Resident Evil Requiem” has been criticized as being too perfunctory. It not only failed to reduce the sense of violation, but made the scene even weirder. For this reason, many Japanese players have begun to place their hopes on the PC MOD community, hoping that there will be modified content that will remove censorship or restore the version in the future.
