If you grew up with a Game & Watch or Tiger Electronics small handheld console, the gameplay of having a fixed background and characters lighting up one by one should be part of your childhood memories. Now there is a development team that plans to bring that style of gameplay back, and it is not a simple remake, but a direct evolution into a modern rhythm action game. “Future Knight” is officially announced and is expected to be available on Steam, PS5, Xbox and Switch platforms.
Upgrade Game & Watch gameplay into a modern action game
“Future Knight” is a 2D shooting action game. The overall visual design deliberately imitates the design of early LCD handheld consoles. The screen looks like characters that light up frame by frame on a static layer, but the gameplay is completely modern-level high-speed combat. Players can shoot, jump, wall-run, and even operate two characters to fight at the same time. The overall rhythm is much crazier than the handheld games of the year.

The development team stated that the game style has a weird aesthetic, blending cute and grotesque elements, and is inspired by Japanese animation and surreal works. The picture seems simple, but in fact every action is dynamically presented in “ink”-like layers, forming a very unsettling and attractive visual sense.
The story setting is crazier than the gameplay
The story setting also takes the absurd route. The game is set on May 23, 1993. The leader of a mysterious organization accidentally wiped out the memory of all mankind, and the world was about to be destroyed in 8 hours. Players take on the role of a robot built from the remains of a 1990s actor, sabotaging their opponents’ plans before the end of the world.
The protagonist still has a benign tumor called “Two More” living in his body, but he has great power and becomes an important combat partner of the player. The entire adventure will unfold according to the enemy’s daily schedule. Each hour represents a different scene. The player’s task is to continuously interfere with the opponent’s plan and delay the end.

Simple appearance, complex gameplay
Although the graphics pay homage to old LCD handheld consoles, the actual gameplay is quite complicated. Players can use a variety of weapons, move at high speeds in the scene, and even add special actions such as dancing during battles. The overall design is like fitting the old-school handheld concept into a modern action game framework.
The development team describes this design as turning the “limitations” of childhood handheld consoles into the core of the style, allowing players to experience a completely different game rhythm within a familiar visual framework. Currently “Future Knight”Confirmed to be on Steam, PS5, Xbox and Switch platforms, players can add it to their wish list and wait for follow-up news.
