Speaking of “Ninja Turtles”, the first thing that most players think of is undoubtedly the side-scrolling action arcade version launched by Konami in 1989. The game was a huge commercial success and became one of the highlights of the recent TMNT: The Cowabunga Collection.
However, despite the popularity of the 1989 arcade version, it was not ported to many home consoles. At that time, there was only an NES version, and there were ZX Spectrum and Amiga ports on the computer. The Game Boy simply did not have enough power to carry this game at the time. But what about the Game Boy Color?
Independent developer tests whether GBC can run Ninja Turtles
Indie developer Zeichi Games is currently conducting a technical test with the goal of seeing if the Game Boy Color can run games similar to 1989’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Although it sounds exciting, this is not actually an official port, but a technical demonstration used to test the new game engine.
The developer said on social media: “At present, I have implemented 8-directional movement, attack system, UI interface, animation and 3-combination system. There is still a lot of work to be done, but I am very satisfied with the current progress. However, please note that this technical demonstration only uses the characters of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” as placeholders.”
In other words, the purpose of this project is not to develop a complete Game Boy Color version of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”, but to test the capabilities of the GBC game engine, which may eventually be used in other games.
Is there a possibility of a Game Boy Color version of Ninja Turtles in the future?
Although this technical demonstration does not mean that we will actually have a GBC version of TMNT, this experiment did spark the interest of many nostalgic players. After all, the Game Boy Color, the handheld console of the late 1990s, never had a Ninja Turtles game that was truly faithful to the arcade version.
Perhaps in the future, this game engine can be used to develop a new Game Boy Color style Ninja Turtles game, and even the official or fan community may have the opportunity to use this technology to create a real GBC version of TMNT!
While this isn’t the Game Boy Color arcade port of Ninja Turtles we’ve been waiting for, this technical test is still worth watching. Would you like to experience the real TMNT on GBC? Still think its charm should remain in arcades and home consoles? Welcome to leave a message to share your views!
